Chapter Seven
THE MORNING after he came out to Deirdre felt strangely similar, in some ways, to the morning after heâd gotten drunk and took Charlie home with him. He woke up with an unnamed dread lying heavy in his stomach, and it took him about half a minute to remember where it came from. He felt heâd crossed another line that would be impossible to cross back over, only this time the stakes were much higher. Now Deirdre knew, so any possibility of him being able to go back to the way things used to be had disappeared. There was one big difference between this and that other morning, however. This time he felt lighter than he had the day before. It felt like heâd solved the hardest problem on a test first and the rest of it should seem easy in comparison. The only thing was, he didnât know if he could finish itâor, more correctly, if he should.
Deirdre had started coffee when he got up, seemingly unaffected by having drunk enough gin to knock out a horse. He hadnât even been drinking, and he felt like heâd been hit by a bus.
âMorning,â she said brightly. âWant some toast?â
âOkay,â he said. He got down cups to fix their coffee. âDeirdre, about what I told you last night. Itâs not going to change anything. Iâm not planning to date any other men. Iâm going to give myself a little more time to process it, and then Iâm going to find a girlfriend.â
Deirdre snorted softly. âDo you know that in Minecraft they have a mod where you can find girlfriends and boyfriends out in the wilderness and take them home like pets?â
âI donât even know what you mean by âmod.ââ
âYes, well, Fiona was telling me about it. She thought it was hilarious, and it is, but also a bit disturbing. Thatâs what you reminded me of just then. Youâre going to go out and find a girlfriend, like itâs a mission. As if it doesnât matter who it is, as long as sheâs willing and looks suitable.â
âThatâs not what I meant,â he said.
The toast popped up, and she set the four slices on the table. As she spread jam on hers she said, âLook, Ethan. I donât care who you go out with. Itâs truly none of my business. But if youâve found someone you like already, youâd be stupid to walk away from it before you know where itâs going.â She set her toast down and looked at him. âThatâs all Iâm going to say to you about it. Eat your toast.â
After Deirdre left he went to pick Fiona up from her sleepover. She talked almost nonstop for the rest of the day about what they did and the things her friends said and what they ate, and Ethan was perfectly happy to let her. He was glad sheâd had such a good time, and after a while he tuned her out a bit, listening with half an ear, so he could think about things some more.
